This was a good tour - not great, but GOOD. Michael speaks english well. Michael is a nice person to spend your day with and he had some good information about the Terracotta Warriors, but had a tendency to repeat himself. Between stops on this tour, Michael fell asleep in the van - which I didn't like because then I felt a need to keep an eye on the driver. Our Driver was excellent and lunch was enjoyable. All my other tour guides contacted me the night before tour date at my hotel to ensure meeting time and location was agreed upon - however Michael didn't contact me so I had to call the Tour Company late at night to confirm time/location. Next day, Michael told me he called the hotel but I didn't answer the phone. This is possible because I was out at dinner - however there was no message left on my phone or with the Concierge.
This was exactly what we wanted and Victoria was an outstanding guide. The mausoleum with the terracotta soldiers is a world treasure. This was the centerpiece of the day. Victoria took us through at the pace we wanted, giving plenty of information about what we were seeing. The later cave home stop is a quick look, all that is needed. We then asked her to choose a lunch place. It was terrific - small, local, and including the regions famed noodles. The visit to Emperor Jingdis tomb was pleasant for its sense of a different time - but most of all because of Victorias explanations. That is the main point: having a guide like Victoria is the reason to do a tour like this. She is extremely knowledgeable about history Chinese but also western and brought the locations alive. This tour was a highlight of our trip.
We went at the beginning of April and had good weather, hot but not overwhelming.
I enjoyed this tour tremendously. My tour-guide was Michael Chang, who is a very pleasant individual, with full of enthusiasm. He has given me a detailed information about the historical facts, as well as the cultural implications of terra cotta soldiers. I was able to chat with him about the Chinese history as well as the history of the excavation. Michael was very keen to my specifications about the selection for lunch, and we went to a wonderful biang biang mian noodle place I hope I spelled it correctly.
I definitely recommend the tour, and particularly Michael as the tour guide.
We do not usually book tours and prefer to arrange everything on our own. We arrived in Xian in the evening and only had 1 full day. Rain was expected and decided to take chance. Everything was arranged the night before. Our team guide and driver showed up the next morning and we were off. Our guide Michael was fantastic. Very knowledgable and very open to discussing Chinese culture past and present. The car was large private van and clean and very comfortable. I will not say anything about the terra cotta warriors its why you are in Xian. Emperor Jingdi's mausoleum was amazing and an excellent way to follow up our visit to the warriors. It's an underground museum in situ. Most everything is still buried but what you see is the city that Jingdi buried with him mostly in terra cotta. Lunch restaurant was fantastic and almost cheap. Did I mention how great our guide Michaal was? Also not having to buy tix as they were included was a very nice touch. I would not want to wait in line at the warriors on a busy day.
I booked this one day tour to the Terracotta Warriors Museum and the Tomb of Emperor Jingdi at Lilys Private Tours.
Needless to say, the Terracotta Museum is an amazing place and a must visit. Although not as famous as the Terracotta Warriors the Emperors Tomb is also definitely worth a visit if you have the time on your hands.
Even though I booked the tour on short notice everything was well organized and went smooth. I was picked up at my hotel in the morning and transferred to the airport in the evening. The vehicle was comfortable and the driver was safe. My tour guide for this day was Anna, a bright young woman, who is very knowledgeable about ancient china. She presented the information about the sights in an interesting and entertaining way and was able to give precise answers to my questions. The restaurant she picked for lunch was reasonable priced and the food was good.
All in all I can recommend Lilys Private Tours without limitations.
