I did a few tours off Viator on my trip to Tokyo and by far this was one of my favorite. Gak is very funny and knowledgeable and passionate about biking. This tour was one of the highlights of my trip which allows you too really see a lot of central Tokyo. The bikes were also in great shape! PS: Gak is a professional mountain biker - He started this company with the belief that the best way to really get a feel of a city through biking. This is from his own personal experience.
Great experience! The bikes are high-quality and in good shape. Mid-April gave us perfect cycling weather, the roads in Tokyo are well maintained hardly any cracks or potholes, and the slopes are very gentle. The traffic gets pretty dense at times, but the drivers are polite and give you enough space. Gaku is a good guide and can tell you a lot about the sights you'll see. He's also very skilled at taking photos!
My wife and I both thought this was the highlight of our trip to Tokyo!! You never really know what to expect when you sign up for these tours but I trusted the reviews and booked a spot. We were not disappointed. The tour exceeded our expectations and Gak the only person who operates this tour was exceptional. In 7 hours, you will cover the city and be immersed in the sights, smells, and beauty of Tokyo. My wife who never bikes and myself who bikes to work everyday were thrilled with the service and experience. If you're thinking of doing a bike tour, definitely do this one. You won't be disappointed.
What a great trip - the highlight of our 7 days in Tokyo and although we took it towards the end of our stay we discovered many sights and districts we hadn't seen before.
Our tour leader, Gak, was a brilliant guide teaching us many things about Japan from how to wash before entering a temple to the different types of sake in the empty barrels at the gates of Meiji shrine. We cycled through quiet backstreets stopping at various sites along the way - things we wouldn't have found on our own and discovered districts like Yoyogi and Roppongi Hills that are perhaps off the standard tourists routes, but were fascinating.
Cycling on our own through Tokyo would have been very difficult as the roads can be confusing but with Gak showing the way it all became very easy, even through the busier areas like Ginza and around the Imperial Palace where Gak guided us through the traffic. It all felt very safe.
The whole tour was excellently organised with very good quality bikes. These had 10 gears which made riding effortless, although Tokyo is quite flat, so as long as you have a little prior experience of riding the 30km route shouldn't hold any fears for anyone and there was a definite thrill in cycling through a huge city. The tour also has a maximum of 5 riders so everyone had chance to get to know each other and meant we were able to travel in a nice compact group.
All the while Gak was taking photos which he emailed to us at the end of the day which was an added bonus. All in all I wouldn't hesitate recommending this tour as a great way of discovering Tokyo in a safe, enjoyable way. Next time we come to Tokyo we will definitely do it again!
Booked this tour on TripAdvisor as my partner and I are not keen on bus tours - we're outdoorsy people and love cycling - and we loved every minute.
Gak, our guide, was a wealth of information with a brilliant grasp of the English language and an absolute adoration for cycling. He took us on a 6 hour cycle ride through areas of Tokyo Prefecture that we wouldn't have seen normally - through bustling traffic to quiet cemeteries, the dockyards to shrines big and small, all with a great explanation about daily life for Tokyo's inhabitants. Don't be put off by the '6-hour' part - it's a very easy ride and pace with no hills save one slight incline - the only thing I would say is that you will need to be a little street smart as cycling in central Tokyo can by busy and you'll need to be able to ride for yourself, confidently.
One of the nicest things about the tour is that Gak continually snaps photos of the group whilst cycling, so you end up with a lovely set of action photographs at the end and need not worry about forgetting the adventure you went on.
We adored it, and we adored Gak. We'd do it again in a heartbeat.
