A mostly wonderful experience during the river cruise and commentary showcasing the traditional buildings on both sides of the SALZACH river. The weather was cool but comfortable. A walk through the vintage streets up to the funicular for a breathtakingly beautiful and scenic ride up the mountain. Our dinner was the least favorable portion of our experience with a meal that was luke warm at best and tasted as though it had been prepared a week before and then plated and served. The service was virtually non existent with our waitress only returning to our table to retrieve her money. We begrudgingly left a tip but felt obligated to do so. The final portion of our evening was worth the price of the entire ticket with an ensemble of eight extremely qualified string instrumentalists and one pianist who was the featured artist. The selections although not all geared to MOZART were varied and pleasing to listen to. The venue of the ancient living quarters of the Archbishop at the hilltop fortress made for a distinct and desirable environment with excellent acoustics. Even though it was raining as we walked back to our hotel the evening was comfortable and warm. It was a sky full of stars and a huge bouquet for the players even though the meal was a definite disappointment and not worth the price!!!!!
Great introduction to Salzburg ! After short cruise, had nice walk to Fortress, took funicular up to fortress for a surprisingly delicious dinner. Then the concert was awesome w/ talented musicians and a break during spectacular sunset backdrop. Note: walk thru fortress up to concert area not easy
The river cruise was ok - I could almost have skipped that piece. We did have amazing weather in mid October which made it enjoyable. It is a good way to see the old town though. Dinner at the fortress was delicious with good service. The fort itself is worth a look. The concert was fantastic and I recommend it even if you don't care that much for classical music. You will appreciate the ambiance.
Whatever you do, buy the VIP ticket. The tour starts with a cruise up the river which is quite informative and relaxing. You are automatically placed at the front of the line. The captain is very clever and even makes the boat dance at the end of the cruise. make your way up to the funicular railway that takes you up the mountain to the fortress where you are seated for dinner next to windows overlooking Salzberg - amazing. The dinner was absolutely fantastic and the staff were great. I chose the veal and it literally melted in my mouth. Next came the main event. Front row centre seats for a string quartet occasionally accompanied by a pianist playing a great selection of classical music - sensational. It's definitely worth the few extra sheckles for the VIP tickets.
We did this tour on our first day in Salzburg and it did not disappoint. The dinner at the Fortress, which we kind of assumed would be at some sort of communal setting, ending up being at a perfect table for two overlooking the city. The dinner was more than good and the wine, reasonably priced, paired perfectly. The concert was held in a very old and beautiful area of the Fortress. Five performers in total, with selections from Mozart, Haydn and Strauss. It lasted 90 minutes, with a short intermission, and was excellent. The ride up and down on the finicular provided a lovely, albeit brief view of the city. But the view from the Fortress itself was wonderful. If anything, the boat ride which was the first leg of this tour, was not particularly informative or picturesque the boat is covered, so if you choose to skip that, you won't miss much. You do, however, need to check in for the boat ride in order to get the proper paperwork for the dinner and concert. We headed to dinner immediately after the boat ride which involves a lovely walk through the town and had a pre-dinner cocktail at the public restaurant at the Fortress. Emerged from the Fortress after the concert to a crystal clear night and a full moon. Perfect end to a very good day.
Great way to explore the beautiful city! Dinner overlooking the valley was breathtaking! We had no idea it would be as picturesque as it turned out to be. The meeting locations were easy to find. The English boat captain was hilarious. Dinner included 3 delicious courses we recommend adding a bottle of wine and Mozart coffee to your meal. Very talented musicians as well. We will definitely do this again!
We enjoyed going to the Salzburg Fortress and enjoyed a wonderful dinner. However, when we went into the concert it had to have been 90 degrees in that room. It was cool outside but there was no ventilation in that room. At intermission, about a third of the audience had to leave as it was too uncomfortable.
