My wife and I took the 100+ year old steamboat over to Walter Peak for the Sheep shearing and BBQ lunch. The entire trip was very well organized and both kids and adults will love being able to see the twin steam engines power the TSS Earnslaw. You can watch the guy shovel coal (1 ton/Hr) in to fuel the boilers. The sheep shearing was entertaining and the dogs did a great job of bringing the sheep to the pen. From there we went to eat a very nice self serve BBQ lunch. There is a wide selection of meats from BBQ Chicken, Pork, Beef, Lamb etc. Go hungry as there is a lot to eat. There was wide selection of desserts which were also very good.
This tour is really really good. The first part is a 45min cruise on a 112ft coal fired steam ship that is fitted out for comfortable passenger travel. There are two covered decks and an open foredeck. The land portion at the Walter Peak farm is very good. It starts off with a sheep shearing and sheep dog demonstration followed by an extravagant bbq buffet lunch with all the food choice you could ever want. The return ship journey is accompanied by a lady playing well known sing-a-long songs on a grand piano. An excellent tour for good value.
I would definitely recommend this experience. The trip on the TSS Earnslaw was lovely. The scenery is beautiful. The location is amazing, the other side of the lake, very remote and peaceful. The lunch was AMAZING! Such a selection of cheeses, meats and desserts. Next time I would definitely choose some activities to do and make a day of it, such as the horse trek.
I have been to Queenstown once before but was unaware of this trip.I was told about this trip from a friend at work. I booked on line and it was easy did want to do the dinner but fully booked. It was February and a beautiful sunny day in Queenstown when we got on the steam boat and headed to Walter Peak. I am pleased we went on the lunch time trip because we got to enjoy the beautiful day. The trip was run efficiently . When we got to Walter Peak we waited a short time to go to lunch . The lunch was which was amazing . Definitely gourmet and a good selection for vegetarian but no fish option. I made up for it with desserts! The dog herding and wool shearing display were also very good. This is th first time I have seen a sheep being sheared live and nice to be so close to the displays. All in all a great day out!
This trip was incredible! We had a group with 2 year olds, 75 year olds, and some in between. This trip entertained all ages and was well worth the reasonable cost. The food was delicious, healthy, and plentiful. There was so much choice on the buffet. In our group we paid and booked separately so when we got to the restaurant they were not expecting a large group. They quickly and professionally accommodated us so we could sit together and immediately brought out coloring books for the young ones. Finding a seat on the boat felt a little chaotic, but otherwise we had no complaints. The sheep shearing and dog demonstration was interesting. It was great to get up close to the animals. We would definitely recommend this trip to anyone!
