I booked this trip as a solo traveler and chose this one initially on the appeal that it was a smaller group and that it'd likely be a better and more intimate way to see Milford Sound and the trip went beyond expectations.Rob was an incredible guide and while some might argue that the drive is something you could easily do yourself in a hire car the local knowledge and experience that Rob brought to the trip can't be undervalued - plus, you get to spend the whole trip looking out at the scenery instead of focusing on the road.Being a smaller group we had the ability to stop more frequently for photos and scenic points of interest than the larger coaches and our boat cruise of Milford was also on a smaller vessel than the big coaches would have had to book, which meant a more relaxed and intimate tour of the sound itself. The BBQ part of the trip was also great. I dropped a note that I was vegetarian and was perfectly catered to. Don't let dietary restrictions stop you from considering this tour. All in all, after taking this tour with Rob as our guide I wouldn't even imagine recommending any other tour to anyone visiting the area and wanting to see Milford. He was quick to point out any wildlife we came across and brought a great mix of humor and information to the journey out and back.
We travelled on the BBQ bus a few days ago to Milford Sound. What a beautiful place to see, a must do if you go to New Zealand. However, we found out the day of the tour that the boat that would normally take us out on the cruise was not operating, therefore we could not have a BBQ lunch, instead we were on a much larger cruise boat with a provided buffet lunch which was absolutely terrible. We definately did not get what we paid for. If we knew that we were not getting a BBQ lunch, then we would have cancelled our tour and driven out ourselves! We would have saved a whole lot of money doing so as well as the tour was very expensive. Overall, it was a nice but long day trip. But we were riding a BBQ bus that did not provide a BBQ and we booked this trip for that reason. So pretty disappointing in the end, but you must visit Milford Sound!
Some have said that the weather variables make for iffy trip. We experienced nothing but fabulous views for the entire trip. Our guide was so entertaining that we almost took our eyes off the scenery along the way. He was also a great cook and prepared our lunch at yet another scenic stop. We could have transported ourselves since we had a rental car, but are happy we didn't. A very relaxing and interesting trip that would have been a real effort without the tour guide.
Fabulous tour with a small group in a large van. Our driver prepared a grilled picnic lunch along the way and also gave fabulous information as we travelled from Queenstown to Milford Sound. When we arrived at the Sound, our driver secured our tickets for the hour long boat ride among the fabulous fjords. Highly recommend taking this tour.
I don' recommend going with this tour.
First of all, The bus was small Mini Bus, it's not like the other large tour buses and it's certainly not suitable for a long trip. The food was below ok, just skewers of chicken or meat with little side dishes. and the most important comment I have is the DRIVING! it's so terrible that we've got motion sickness! I don't ever get motion sick in a vehicle but I did with this tour. be very considerate if your going to choose this tour and keep in mind you'll spend A LOT of time in the bus. other than that the stops on the way were great Short stops, like just a few minutes. the barbecue stop is longer of course and it was in an amazing spot so expect lot's of photography opportunities. No need to talk about Milford sound of course, that place was like heaven.
Was such a great trip! The driver was extremely knowledgeable and so fun! He was very entertaining and was great about taking us to some stops that were not busy with tourists so we were able to get great photos! The lunch he brought was very tasty! The boat was also great! It was such beautiful scenery and you could either sit outside or inside if it was too cool. The driver even brought us up to some waterfalls and those at the front of the boat could stand under it! We also decide to take a helicopter ride back instead of the bus back per a recommendation from our driver and that flight was amazing!! Best decision of our lives! Worth every penny! The scenery you see from that flight is just amazing!
Both my brother and I were very disappointed with our day in Milford Sound. Our bus driver informed us only toward the end of the long bus journey that it was very unlikely we would be able to cruise due to the weather forecast. Upon arrival to the center where all the cruise boats were docked we were eventually told our boat was going to cruise and we would have the water to ourselves as all other companies had cancelled their tours. At first we thought we were the lucky ones, but it was immediately evident upon departing that our cruise operators simply did not want to reimburse everyone's money. The waters were so choppy that hardly anyone ventured outside to take in views, including our bus tour guide who cooked inside the boat, he said for the first time. Everyone had to get their food while holding on to things to keep from flying everywhere. I almost lost my lunch shortly after eating and people fell on the stairs getting to the upper lever where we were assigned to sit. The only pictures I got in the freezing wind and rain were hardly comparable to the beautiful scenes showcased on the videos at the center. While I understand the tour operators could not control the weather, they could control offering some sort of reimbursement for the wasted time.
