We debated a boat versus van snorkeling trip and opted for the van and two locations to snorkel. Both locations were fantastic with excellent shower and change facilities and tons of fish from the minute you enter the water. The guide was also fantastic, providing us with excellent advice and ample time at each location, 1 hour plus! Well worth the effort and no need or advantage from our view in using a boat tour.
Our guide was Marco and he was fabulous. He picked us up at our rental condo and took us to both beaches. We expected a larger group but it was just the two of us and Marco. This was one of the best outings we had while in Cabo and highly recommend it. I'm not a stronger swimmer, but had no problems with instructions from Marco.
We took a cruise to the Mexican Riviera over New Years and I decided to book this excursion through Viator instead of the cruise ship. The company, High Tide Los Cabos, was real easy to work with. Although I went to the wrong OXXO station in Cabo, our guide Sergio was patient and waited until we made contact and finally connected at the right location. The tour was originally scheduled to visit Chileno Bay and Santa Maria. But Sergio suggested we spend our time at Chileno Bay due to the new developments being built at SM and we would have to park a ways away and walk through sand dunes to get to it. We agreed and off we went.
We were warned Chileno could be very busy since it was January 1st but the experience would be so much better. Chileno was packed but Sergio found a parking spot and set us all up with masks, snorkels and fins, and also granola bars and bottled water for snacks. He also set up big beach umbrellas for shade and gave us the lowdown on the area.
Although busy, Chileno Bay was more than worth it. As soon as we were waist deep in the water we were surrounded by fish. Sergio told us the beach is the cleanest and best in Cabo and he was right. He also told us its a marine park reserve which is why its always full of fish to look at. Sergio also told our kids exactly where to snorkel to see the best sights on the coral. Our adult kids went out a bit in to a cove to snorkel away from the crowds and saw even more fish, including a puffer.
It was a great day at the beach and went by very quickly. Sergio also pointed out historical areas and shared much of the history of the area while going to and back from CB. Our entire group of six had a great time and much of it was due to Sergio. We got back in plenty of time to get back on our cruise ship. It was a very satisfying day.
Jules was our guide/instructor. He showed up on time and did everything the blurb said he should. His English was OK. He took time to explain the basics of snorkeling to us. He was very client oriented. When we were comfortable in the water, he attracted fish to our area by shredding a granola bar. It worked. It was a nice touch.. I don't have any complaints. It was a good experience.
We chose this excursion instead of an excursion from the ship because we wanted to snorkel and none of the ship excursions allowed me 6yr old son to snorkel. This was a great alternative. The information says that you get granola bars but we did not get any. They used the granola bars to feed the fish which was cool but then we were hungry. Also, the only shade provided was by small flimsy umbrellas instead of an EZ-UP or something that we could actually sit under so that was frustrating since it was SUPER hot! Lastly, the staff was super friendly but we almost missed the meet up because we had a hard time finding their 1 staff member. Overall: Great beaches and friendly staff, just a few disappointments.
Great tour. We saw so many fish and our guide provided everything. We took a van ride to Santa Maria beach and we swam with our guide and saw so much. He set up umbrellas for us and had waters and snacks. All snorkeling equipment was provided. We were a small group and we decided to stay at Santa Maria Beach. Highlight of our cruise.
