I really enjoyed this tour. We had a great guide but sadly I can't remember his name. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. Helped me out a lot when we had traditional dim sum as I am allergic to certain spices but he still managed to find me plenty to eat. Took us to a local karaoke bar which was just something to behold. It really doesn't matter if you can't sing, people were belting out their favourite tunes and left happy, what more could you ask for.
I thought the price was very reasonable too.
We have taken many tours with Viator and other similar groups. This was by far the worst we have ever taken. While our guide was personable he had no sensitivity to the actual group he was leading. We were a group of 8 middle aged women and one man. After meeting in a difficult to find underground station we proceeded to a shabby waffle stand where Armia, the guide, told us uninteresting stories of his childhood eating a Chinese variant of waffles called egg puffs. They were dry and bland. Nothing was offered to wash down the tasteless mush in our mouths. We then walked fifteen feet to the corner where he pointed out a rather shambolic street market, but never took us into it to mingle with the locals. After suffering through his rambling stories, useless facts and silly questions to us he led us down a dark street with shuttered shops to look at the night fruit market where vendors were just setting up their stands. Once again we hardly ventured into the stalls as it was too early to really get a feel for the experience. Following that non-event, we walked along a heavy trafficked street leading to what was once a well known cinema but was now an opera house. Rather than tell us about Chinese opera he droned on about how teen age boys loved to come to this theatre to watch porn. He went on and on about things that none of us were interested in. If I am boring you with this review, be thankful you were not on the tour. The highlight was meant to be a typical dinner. Typical for someone, perhaps, but we were the only ones in this restaurant. All the other restaurants were crowded with market sellers or buyers. Armia led us up a steep staircase where the open kitchen was so filthy none of us wanted to eat. He had pre-ordered so all the dishes arrived at once, each more disgusting than the next. He took no time explaining the food, no time asking if we would like to drink anything and nothing was mentioned about why he chose this particular place. Pay-off is the only reason we can think of. At this point we cut our losses and left the tour. In two hours we had seen all four sides of a one block area, listened to complete nonsense, been served an inedible meal and paid for the privilege. AVOID this tour. We were so disappointed we cancelled our following day's tour and are rethinking the six other tours we have booked with Viator. If this is the quality of their tours in China, we'll find another tour company.
We had an informative guide who told us little known tidbits and interesting stories about the storied past and present of the Yau Ma Tei and Jordon areas of Kowloon. The night included a visit to the Temple Street market, a delicious dinner, and a fun visit to an old-school karaoke bar. Highly recommended if you want to get away from the touristy areas of the island and come to Kowloon for a more authentic experience!
This was a unique experience and very enjoyable. We benefited by being the only two on the tour. The guide explained in detail everything we saw, she was very informative and let us complete the tour at our own pace. I am sure that without her we would not have gone into the bars that we did and were therefore able to see the real Kowloon enjoyed by the Hong Kong people themselves.
