Tour was great. Dad had met us under the umbrella and promptly took us to the distillery. It was about a 10 minute drive and he gave us a little background on Georgetown and Grand Cayman. He gave us about 90 minutes for the actual tour before returning. The tour itself was great with tons of samples
This tour was an absolute blast! The kiosk at the port was easy to find, the driver was friendly and punctual and the staff at the distillery was extremely entertaining. The tour itself was also very informative. Plenty of samples are available prior to, during, and after the tour which are included in the very reasonable tour fee. You will not be disappointed. We bought one of the small souvenir barrels and a couple bottles of white rum, which is now aging on my liquor cabinet in Fort Lauderdale. The tour itself is about an hour, which leaves plenty of time for shopping or grabbing a bite to eat in town. Next time we are in Grand Cayman, we will probably do this again!
Tour was excellent, a small young distillery, the guide was wonderful, explained the process from beginning to end and answered all our questions, and the rum and vodka were all very good... but the tour operators Discount Tours dropped us off but never came back despite several calls from the distillery operators, they were kind enough to call a taxi for us, so that was an extra expense. my suggestion grab a taxi not a long trip 4 per person and do it yourself or some other company offering the same tour.
Just a warning -- there are several locations where the tender boats dock so you need to walk around and make sure you are in the right place. We were told to meet at a yellow and blue kiosk, but there are several those colors! Anyway, once we found our guide all went smoothly. The distillery is about a 15 minute ride from town. Our driver was very chatty and gave us lots of laughs. The distillery is small but the people running it were very professional and informative about the process of making their different varieties. You even get to see the rum being bottled. The tasting is super generous and you can taste as many flavors or types as you want. It was fun to combine flavors -- my personal favorite was banana, coconut and coffee together ... yummy! Our driver was a few minutes late picking us back up but the traffic with so many ships in port is very congested. He dropped us back in town so we could shop a bit and catch the tender back to our ship.
I'm giving this 5 stars because of the tour guide/driver and the male tour guide at the distillery. Both were great and knowledgeable. This is basically a taxi ride to the distillery and back to the port shopping area. If this is what you are looking for that, this fits. The distillery guide was very informative and they are free with the pours. We tasted rum at various stages in the distillery process. Our tour guide/driver was informative, professional and pleasant, sorry I can't remember his name. He is a Cayman native and took us to a delicious seaside restaurant, Cayman cabana. Our meal was delicious. Fish tacos, Drunken shrimp, fish and chips, onion rings and 3 drinks - 77 cayman, 96 US dollars. I little surprised but the meal was so delicious, the seafood is fresh caught, we saw the fishermen cleaning fresh caught fish at the shore. Would go back again.
It is a nice inexpensive way to spend your port visit. Tour with tasting was about an hour leaving the rest of the time to shop and enjoy Grand Cayman.
Impressed with the small micro-Distillery. Had to come home with a bottle of Seven Fathom Rum. Impressive story that surrounds it. Tour is given by on premise owners. Made it personal and informative. Worth the money!
