Flamingo Gardens

Aside from the Everglades, there aren't very many places in Florida where you can find native jungle. One exception is Flamingo Gardens, a wonderfully preserved botanical garden that's been here since 1927 and pays homage to southern Florida's landscape. Hop aboard the narrated tram ride for a journey into a pristine section of native Florida wilderness, which appears unchanged from the time that Seminole Indians lived in these woods. Over 3,000 plant and flower species, including rare, tropical, and Florida-native ones, thrive in the gardens.

Elsewhere at Flamingo Gardens, travelers can discover Florida's animals at the Everglades Wildlife Sanctuary. See rehabilitated black bears, panthers, bobcats, and gators, and stop in at one of the live educational presentations. If it's hundreds of flapping wings you're after, be sure to stroll through the free-flight aviary with its 250 birds—45 of which are native to south Florida and burst with tropical colors. To cap off the visit with a bit of history, the site's Wray Home Museum depicts life in south Florida as it was in the 1930s and educates visitors on how the property progressed from a simple garden to the major attraction it is today.
